Yelagiri earlier called as the ‘poor mans Ooty’ was the beacon of budget destination. The travelers who can’t afford to visit Ooty always en route to Yelagiri. Yeracaud by that time was also visited in few numbers by the vacationers. But in recent years, with sudden development measures taken by the state government, Yelagiri is no more called as the poor man’s Ooty. It is visited by the travelers of age groups and cultures. Similar transformations have been noticed in the travel trends of the visitors coming to Yercaud. Yelgairi is blessed with dams, parks, gardens, water falls and many more gifts of nature. The travelers while on a Tour to Yelagiri can make visit to telescopic points like Swamimalai, Telescope House, Jalagamparai Waterfalls and Yelagiri Nature Park. Yercaud on other hand is embossed with Lady’s seat, Giant Seat, Pagoda Point and Botanical Garden. In Yercaud Killiyur Falls are worth visiting. The Chennai trekking club every year organizes special programs to attract good numbers of adventure enthusiasts. Beer’s cave is another attraction formed by two boulders. Yelagiri in this sense doesn’t have any cave but it has mini zoo and adventure options. Summer festival, Paragliding festival and camping at YMCA center are assured to make the whole touring experience simply the best. Various Tamil movies and some songs of movie ‘Robot’ and ‘Shivaji’ were shot amidst the rocky terrains of Yelagiri. Yercaud also offers camping opportunities which are included in the Yercaud Tour packages. Yelagiri gaining some extra points give a tough fight to Yercaud. Yelagiri has a fish museum, boating at Punganoor Lake and Mordhana Dam. The vacationers at the above mentioned destinations somehow show that Yelagiri is scoring equally at par to Yercaud but that’s not the conclusion.
The travelers visiting Yercaud are assured to enjoy a stroll in verdure gardens and the eyes of animal species staring them with anxiousness. Anna Park, Children’s Park, Silk Farm and Rose Garden, National Orchidarium and Deer park are the destinations, strong enough to solidify their foothold in front of Yealagiri. Yelagiri is 240 kms from Chennai and Yercaud is 355 kms from Chennai, which shows that Yelgairi is near to the metropolitan city of Tamil Nadu. Even Yercaud celebrates summer festival in the May month every year. Capsicum fries is the famous food which the travelers can enjoy at the lake side. Yelagiri is known for its scrumptious honey and jack fruit. The travelers can purchase it from hawkers or near by shops. Yercaud is a better tourist magnet when gauged in terms of accommodation. Similarly, Yelagiri’s main railway head is Jalorpet Junction which 19 kms away where as Salem railway station is 35 kms from Yercaud. This distinction in terms of accessibility shows that Yelagiri is better off than Yercaud. In fact, now the image which was vague earlier has now got more transparent. Both the destinations have good factors and parameters except the absence of few, but that doesn’t declare the victory or defeat of any of them. It completely depends on travelers to decide which of the two destinations fit their thinking very well? Yelgairi or Yercaud. After reading the chart and description, the aspiring travelers should first listen the voice of their acumen and conclude which destination is winning war.
